For their next concert Barts Choir will return to the Cadogan Hall in December for two performances of this masterpiece of Renaissance music, published and probably first performed in Venice where Monteverdi was appointed maestro di capella at St Mark’s Basilica.

Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers stands at a watershed, looking backwards to 16th-century polyphony and forwards to the homophonic, melodic and dramatic styles of the 17th-century, which Monteverdi helped to pioneer. The fusion of plainchant, madrigal and operatic styles contrast to help sustain the musical interest over the work’s large span, comprising five Vespers psalms, Ave Maris Stella, the Magnificat, and a number of shorter motets.

Ticket prices £32.00, 26.00, 18.00 and concessions for ages 26 and younger.

Available from the Cadogan Hall box office and website (booking fees apply).
