Inspired by the tension between the fast pace of technology and the natural world, the collection is underpinned by a bold, provocative campaign shot by globally renowned portrait photographer Platon. A longstanding collaborator and friend of the brand, Platon’s award-winning portfolio includes work for the New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Vogue, and GQ, as well as portraits of some of the world’s most powerful leaders.
“We are going through one of the most transformative periods in the history of the planet – the fourth industrial revolution,” Platon said. “We are pushing technology at a faster rate than we can control and with this come challenging, unexpected consequences that have the potential to harm the planet and disrupt the natural order. I wanted to create a set of images that related to this in terms of style and self-expression; a dialogue with the unnatural, technological world of speed and innovation and the natural world in which Mother Nature bites back.”
The new collection comprises 12 models, each available in three colourways. Within the range are six new styles and six classic styles from the archive that have been reinterpreted with the contemporary detailing, manufacturing and fit.
Representing the spirit of the campaign, highlights from the collection include the nature-inspired petal shaped lugs of the 1241 and the patterned temple core of the 1239. These contrast with the modern 1249, which features a metal double bridge construction, and the 1246 with flat Zeiss silver mirrored lenses and silver illusion Italian acetate.
Available in a limited edition uniquely for Spring/Summer 1017, the 1249 also comes in a classic navy blue with real gold plated metal and flat gold lenses. Each piece is numbered and stamped individually in a limited production run of 200, which will be available through selected retailers in Cutler and Gross flagship stores.
All frames are crafted by hand in the company’s dedicated factory in Cadore, Italy, from the finest Italian acetate and high-grade metals featuring hand-riveted hinges. The importance of the artisanal creation of each pair of sunglasses remains one of the essences of the brand, with each frame taking four to six weeks to produce. This manufacturing process, with 42 tailored steps by expert frame makers, gives each frame its unique character.
The new collection will be available at Cutler and Gross stores, online and at selected stockists worldwide from March 2017.
