Victoria Borwick, MP for Kensington, visited the Terrence Higgins Trust to find out about its work tackling HIV and sexual health, and to take part in a complementary therapy session.
Victoria met volunteers and staff from the charity and discussed the importance of supporting people living with HIV. She also heard about the charity’s prevention work and how they have been challenging the stigma that still exists around the long term health condition.
Victoria also took part in a mini-reflexology session, alongside people living with HIV, to experience first hand how these therapies benefit people living with HIV by reducing stress and anxiety, helping with pain relief and the long term affects of living with the virus.
“I was delighted to visit Terrence Higgins Trust today and see first hand how they support people living with and affected by HIV locally,” said Victoria Borwick MP.
“Complementary therapy, as I found out today by taking part in a session, is one of the tools we have to ensure people living with HIV here in Kensington can live healthily and well.
“It was great to hear the work Terrence Higgins Trust are doing across the UK to support people living and affected by HIV and poor sexual health.”
In 2015, 57 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in Kensington and Chelsea. Thirty-three percent of people newly diagnosed in the borough between 2013 and 2015 were diagnosed late, once the virus has started to damage the immune system.
“We’re delighted Victoria Borwick MP has taken the time to visit us, and see first hand the work that Terrence Higgins Trust is doing to help people living with HIV to live well,” said Karen Bowers, London Operational Manager at Terrence Higgins Trust.
“Our vital work not only helps support local people living with HIV and other sexual health conditions, but also promotes HIV prevention and good sexual health across London and the UK.”
