Hammersmith Station evacuated due to suspect package

Hammersmith tube station was evacuated this afternoon following the discovery of a suspicious package just after 14:30. Metropolitan Police and the British Transport Police attended the scene and secured the package, which was thought to have been placed in a bin.

Local streets were placed on lockdown and, according to Twitter reports from the area, a controlled explosion took place. Twitter user Rehana Popal (@Rehana_Popal) wrote, ‘An explosion just went off at Hammersmith station’, whilst fellow Tweeter @No_Solace tweeted a picture of the bin in question.  She wrote, ‘Hammersmith station was evacuated because of what seemed to be a bomb in a bin. Controlled explosion was heard right after… This is the bin’.

British Transport Police claimed the incident was ‘not suspicious’ and confirmed at 15:15 that the area, including the tube station, was gradually being reopened to the public. Police are naturally on high alert across the capital, as the UK’s threat level from terrorist attacks has been classed as ‘severe’ for the past two years.
