Doorstep Library – National Volunteers’ Week

0

It’s National Volunteers’ Week and here at Doorstep Library we want to celebrate all that our amazing volunteers do for the local London communities we work in.

Doorstep Library is a literacy charity that believes in the power of words to take children places, not just in their imagination, but in their lives. Operating in some of the most disadvantaged areas of London, our volunteers bring the magic of books and share a love of reading with children ages 0-11.

Our volunteers don’t just read stories. By making reading fun first, we inspire children to experience the joy of stories and books. Other literacy charities get books into homes; our unique home-based service means we are there in person to lend and pick up books, share reading with children and support parents to continue enjoying these stories long after we’ve left. We empower parents to get involved in their children’s education and, sometimes we’re there as extra support, whether we’re signposting to a local family service, lending an ear, or just being a friendly face. Before we go, children choose books they like and we leave these with them for the week.

Our volunteers receive training and mentoring from us. They go out in pairs knocking on doors, carrying rucksacks filled with fabulous books and visit with a number of families each week. The experience of being a Doorstep Library volunteer is as rewarding for the volunteer as it is for the children they visit. Our volunteers develop strong bonds with the families and communities they operate in and tell us all the time about how much they love it!

“It’s so rewarding to see excited faces waiting by the door for our call – carrying books to return as they anxiously probe in our rucksacks for more treasure. Opening a book together is priceless”.

If you would like to join the Doorstep Library team you can visit our website at:  www.doorsteplibrary.org.uk or write to us at: volunteer@doorsteplibrary.org.uk and sign up for an Information Session where you will find out all you need to know. We have projects in Hammersmith and Fulham, Westminster and Lambeth and many children are waiting for someone to visit them. Could it be you?
