On May 22nd, 2019, the Bulgarian Embassy in London held a wreath laying ceremony in honour of British Prime Minister William E. Gladstone. The event, which took place at the Gladstone statue in Westminster (Aldwych), was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, British friends of Bulgaria, as well as members of the Bulgarian community in London.
The event was hosted by the Bulgarian Ambassador in London, Mr. Marin Raykov, who spoke about William Gladstone’s priceless contribution to the Bulgarian cause during one of the Bulgarian people’s darkest hours, the months following the April uprising, as well as later on, during the restoration of Bulgarian statehood in 1878. In this context, the Ambassador stressed that Gladstone’s contributions are directly related to the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Great Britain, which we are celebrating in 2019.
The Deputy Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Louise Hyams, also spoke at the event and laid a wreath on behalf of the City of Westminster. The third speaker at the ceremony was Mr. Peter Francis, Warden and Director of the Gladstone Library.
