Karen Buck MP (Labour) has gained bipartisan support for a proposal that will allow tenants to take legal action against landlords who fail to maintain safe standards for rented homes.

As part of the proposal, landlords must ensure that rental properties meet the required standards for rental homes at the beginning and duration of tenancies.

After Housing Secretary Sajid Javid announced his support for the draft legislation, Buck tweeted:

“Delighted to confirm that the Government will be supporting my Private Member’s Bill to strengthen tenants’ rights and ensure homes are fit for human habitation. Now let’s make it law.”

The broader attack on rogue landlords among politicians from both sides of the aisle has proven to be popular with voters.

Local authorities can also fine landlords up to £30,000 and from April onwards, will be able to issue banning orders and expulsion from the market altogether.
