Everyone Active at Westway Sports support even more talented athletes as part of its ‘Sporting Champions’ scheme.
Up-and-coming athletes in the North Kensington area have been given the opportunity to gain professional support as part of a local talent development scheme.
Now in its second year, Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions scheme is providing even more talented local sports stars with the facilities and funds needed to support their training and help them reach their full potential.
As many as five local athletes are now being offered support through the scheme. Among the emerging talent on the scheme is tennis para-athlete, Esah Hayat, who trains regularly at Westway Sports & Fitness Centre. Esah Hayat, is one of Britain’s greatest deaf tennis talents. At the age of just 14, Esah already has a number of achievements under his belt, including the title of U18 World Deaf Tennis Champion in 2015, followed by three consecutive wins in the singles and doubles at the National Deaf Championships 2016. On the international stage, Esah will be representing Great Britain at the Deaflympics 2017.
Climbers, Logan Burrows, Eddie Hardman and Ethan McCall will be supported by the development scheme as bronze level athletes this year. Other local sports stars have also been awarded with the scheme’s bronze level sponsorship, which provides them with free access to Westway Sports & Fitness Centre, which is operated by Everyone Active in partnership with Westway Sports Trust, as well as all of the leisure operators centres nationwide.
“Being part of schemes like this, supporting young athletes to make the most of sporting opportunities, was one of the reasons we chose to partner with Everyone Active to deliver sports and fitness under the Westway. I’m delighted to see the range of young people and sports that are being supported here and I looking forward to celebrating further sporting success in North Kensington”, says Director of Sport and Leisure at Westway Sports Trust, Stephen Wren.
Olympic silver medallist, Colin Jackson CBE, is continuing to support the scheme through his role as an ambassador. Alongside some of Team GB’s top talent, he will play an integral part in providing both one-to-one and group mentoring opportunities to the athletes; a new addition to the scheme this year.
Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions helps athletes to achieve national and international sporting success by offering them gold, silver or bronze tiers of sponsorship. These packages provide them with funding of up to £5k to help towards training, equipment, travel and competition costs, as well as access to over 150 Everyone Active leisure centres nationwide.
“It’s fantastic to see such a wealth of upcoming local sporting talent in the area and we are delighted to be supporting these athletes on their journey,” says Everyone Active Contract Manager Alison Norman. “Since launching last year, our Sporting Champions scheme has been very successful in providing exceptional support to emerging talent. It’s fantastic to see that the scheme has now expanded to provide 300 athletes nationwide with access to top-quality training facilities and support.”
“As a leisure provider working in partnership with the council, we feel it is important to cater for all sectors of the community, including emerging talent by reducing the costs required to perform at the highest level. We hope to continue making a real difference to our athlete’s success.”
In its first year, Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions invested more than £100k into helping over 130 athletes to achieve success. It has pledged to invest a further £1million into the scheme over the next three years, with the aim of having 500 athletes signed up by the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
Scheme ambassador, Colin Jackson, said; “I’m proud to once again be involved with a scheme which is so dedicated to supporting athletic talent from grass roots up.
“It’s important that we drive sporting excellence in our country, and the Everyone Active Sporting Champions scheme is already supporting hundreds of our young prospects to achieve their sporting dreams.”
As well as local up and coming athletes a strong line-up of Olympic and Paralympic athletes will be supported by the scheme as ‘Gold sponsored athletes’, including new addition to the scheme, Team GB Hockey captain Alex Danson MBE. In 2016, Alex achieved sporting glory as part of the gold medal winning team who made history at the Rio Olympic Games as the first GB women’s hockey team to become Olympic Champions.
Once again, Jade Jones, a Paralympic athletics World Championships finalist, will also be on the programme’s gold sponsorship scheme, along with Olympic gymnast Brinn Bevan, who formed part of the British men’s silver medal winning team at the 2015 World Championships.
