Macron sends a clear climate message to Trump

French president Emanuel Macron has released a provocative video inviting American climate researchers, entrepreneurs and engineers to France where they are “welcome”.

The video message, which has gone viral on social media, appears to be a direct snub to Donald Trump’s climate policies.

“I do know how your new president now has decided to jeopardize your budget, your initiatives, as he is extremely skeptical about climate change,” said Macron.

The video comes after Macron’s promise to promote international cooperation on climate change in his presidential victory speech. Macron, a pro-EU candidate won two thirds of the vote in a run-off against the far right’s Marine Le Pen.

His video goes on to promote two messages from one for France and one for America:

“For the French, we will reinforce our investment, our public and private investment in order to do more, and accelerate our initiative in order to deliver in line with COP21.”

“And second, a message for you guys. Please come to France, you are welcome, it’s your nation, we like innovation. We want innovative people. We want people working on climate change, energy, renewables and new technologies. France is your nation.”
