Following the US election results this morning, PM Theresa May congratulated Donald Trump for being elected as the 45th President of the United States.

After winning the key states of Ohio, Florida, and Pennsylvania, Trump pulled ahead of his rival candidate, Hillary Clinton, and, by 8:10 GMT, Trump had received more than the necessary 270 electoral college votes to win the election. Clinton phoned Trump to concede the election shortly before Trump made a victorious speech in Manhattan.

PM Theresa May congratulated Trump in a statement released today.

“I would like to congratulate Donald Trump on being elected the next President of the United States, following a hard-fought campaign. Britain and the United States have an enduring and special relationship based on the values of freedom, democracy and enterprise. We are, and will remain, strong and close partners on trade, security and defence. I look forward to working with President-elect Donald Trump, building on these ties to ensure the security and prosperity of our nations in the years ahead,” said May.
